River Locust

Amorpha fruticosa

An excellent and easy to use nitrogen fixing native shrub. Can get up to 15 feet tall, but easily maintained smaller with pruning. Grows in both dry and wet soils. Easy to manage, it’s not a true locust and doesn’t have thorns. Cut it back aggressively for the nitrogen fertilization from the roots and fast decomposing leaf litter. Also an excellent pollinator plant, with purple/yellow flowers. Can be used as livestock fodder. Can grow in partial shade or full sun. Sometimes referred to as False Indigo Bush. Not to be confused with Blue False Indigo (Baptisia australis), a different nitrogen fixing perennial.

Time to productivity: 2 years until it reaches a prunable size.
