Juglans ailantifolia cordiformis

Heartnuts are a delicious edible nut sometimes known as Japanese Walnuts. These are seedlings of a high quality and extremely productive parent tree in Western Washington. They grow to be large, beautiful trees that are widely adapted and are notably tolerant of wet sites. The nuts are sweet and shaped like a heart, in taste tests they are generally said to have better flavor than walnuts, but can be used interchangeably. Heartnuts have shells that are thick but easy to crack. Amazingly they can be stored in the shell for 10 years! Trees are fast growing with huge leaves.

USDA Zone: 5-9

Pollination: Self-fertile but will produce more nuts if planted with a second heartnut seedling nearby.

Time to productivity: About 5 years depending on conditions.

Ripening time: Late September-October

Size: Will grow 50′-60′ tall.
