Elaeagnus multiflora> The Tillamook, aka Carmine, Goumi comes from Lucile Whitman of Whitman Farms in Tillamook, OR. These Goumi are the largest fruited and most productive variety widely available for sale in the United States. They are twice as productive as most other varieties with fruit up to an inch in length. Plants are not thorny but are much more vigorous than other varieties, eventually reaching 12’ or larger if unprunned. If you're looking for production and fruit quality, this is the Goumi variety to get! Goumi berries are sweet-tart, full of antioxidants, and ripen in early summer, even in the shade. They are also excellent made into fruit leathers, jam, or dried, when their one large seed becomes less noticeable. Drought tolerant, this is one nitrogen fixing berry plant that is an excellent companion for fruit trees, gardens and in a food forest. The Tillamook variety in particular is especially well suited to heavy pruning or “chop-and-drop” style management, where it will deposit more nitrogen into the soil before regrowing and producing again the following year. The timing of pruning will vary based on your management priorities. Goumi will perform well in the understory and keeps its silvery green leaves for much of the year in the Pacific Northwest, remaining evergreen in especially mild areas. It is in the same genus as the popular ornamental plant silverberry. Goumi and its related plants are sometimes known as oleaster.
